El Museo del Barrio honored celebrated fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez at its annual Gala, held on Thursday, May 17th in New York City at Cipriani 42nd Street. During this festive evening, the celebrated fashion visionary was presented with an award for artistic achievement in honor of his career and longtime patronage of the organization. A Cuban descendent and proud member of the Latin American community, Rodriguez’s work frequently draws inspiration from Latino art and culture. A three-time CFDA award winner, Rodriguez is considered one of the “25 Most Influential Hispanics in America.” The annual fundraiser, now in its 19th year, will also payed tribute to philanthropist and El Museo trustee Yaz Hernández and corporate visionary Bacardi USA.
“El Museo strives to keep Latino art and culture alive and Narciso exemplifies that mission with his dedication to incorporating his heritage into every aspect of his work,” said Margarita Aguilar, Executive Director of El Museo del Barrio. “We’re thrilled to be honoring such a prominent figure in the Latino community.” Along with Rodriguez, El Museo will honored Yaz Hernández with a trustee leadership award. An influential member of the museum’s Executive Committee Board and a former Chair of the Gala, Yaz has been recognized by the New York Post as one of the top Latin movers and shakers in New York. Her leadership has set a new standard of excellence for the Gala, which has recently been called “one of the most glamorous benefits on the annual social calendar” by the New York Social Diary. The museum will also presented Bacardi USA with the 2012 Corporate Excellence in the Arts Award as it celebrates the 150th anniversary of the company’s founding in Santiago de Cuba. Well deserving of acknowledgment by the museum, Bacardi has become a remarkable American corporate success story and a source of pride for both Latinos and non-Latinos alike. Among those honored by El Museo del Barrio in the past include Mario Testino, Plácido Domingo, Emilio and Gloria Estefan, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mario Vargas-Llosa, Ford Foundation, The Reed Foundation, Jacques and Natasha Gelman Trust, JP Morgan Chase, and Merrill Lynch. This spectacular event brought together luminaries from the worlds of fashion, entertainment, business, society, politics and the arts in order to raise crucial operating funds for the museum. Previous attendees have included: Estrellita and Daniel Brodsky, Clarissa and Edgar Bronfman, Ambassador Paul and Trudy Cejas, Francisco Costa, President Cesar Gaviria, Marifé Hernández and Joel Bell, Carolina and Reinaldo Herrera, Ramiro and Patricia Ortiz Mayorga, Carlos Picón, Oscar de la Renta, Governor Bill Richardson, Ruben and Isabel Toledo, Carmen Ana and Joe Unanue, Kate Winslet, and Anna Wintour. Over 550 Latino and non-Latino business leaders and philanthropists are projected to attend this year’s gala. The proceeds of this event went toward El Museo’s Education programs, which reached 13,000 students from over 150 schools, plus an additional 46,000 children and adults through free cultural celebration and public programs last year. These valuable programs help foster the next generation of critically thinking citizens in an environment that stimulates creativity, builds self-confidence, and fosters pride. Last week I had the opportunity to attend a private viewing of BET's RIP the Runway hosted by Height Magazine, at club TAJ in the city. I enjoyed myself, mingled and networked a bit.
It is possible that it could be my love for retro fashion or the pin up era style but there is just something about a bralet that excites me. Now I will say this, they most certainly aren't for everyone. I am a stickler for being "fit and chic" meaning that when you look and feel your best your outfit will look even better.
I am feeling somewhat proud of myself this week, I worked out from Monday to Friday. It’s not a first for me but considering that I am always on this on again off again relationship with exercise, I’m happy that my first week back on the wagon was a success. I can only pray that the weeks to come are just as successful. I still have 15lbs I want to lose. Last time I was on my mega fit fix I was only 8lbs shy of my goal, I hit plateau and gave up. I slowly let 17 pounds creep up on me. I’m ready to continue my battle with the bulge. I started working out again semi-consistently back in December and by January had lost ten pounds. I have lots of pictures I can share, I keep forgetting too. However like I had mentioned earlier my weight and I have this on again off again relationship so after having food poisoning I slacked on my diet and exercise for two weeks. This brings me to today; trying once more to keep a steady diet and workout regimen to meet my goal of 160lbs. I am aim more to tone allover, especially tone and trim my core. I will keep you all posted and if you follow me on any of my social networks you will have an up to date feed of my journey. My fitness & diet this week in photos...Guest Post By: Gary GuarasciHello to all you fellow fashion fans. I’ll be guest blogging this week and I’m here to tell you about all the latest and greatest fashion finds. Okay, I’m lying. It’s not a good way to start off with you, but I can’t help it. I’m a compulsive liar. That’s what I do. I don’t know the first thing about fashion, and I was trying to dupe you all into thinking that I did. For that I’m sorry. To be honest, I don’t even know what any of the fashion terms mean. The closest I ever came to learning the terms is when my place of employment came out with a dress code, which included the termination of flip-flops. They threw out terms like Peep Toe Wedge Heel and something strappy, I think. I don’t know I wasn’t really paying attention. All I know is that my job would only allow two toes shown at. Sweat pants were banned along with short-shorts. Tank tops were no longer welcome, unless worn underneath a button down blouse. I still don’t know the difference between a blouse and a top, but that’s a story for a different time. My ignorance from fashion doesn’t just stop with that. To me an accessory was a ball cap, but apparently it’s everything from earrings to bracelets to necklaces etc. etc. etc. Who woulda thunk? So instead of trying to pull a ruse on you all, with my claims of fashion knowledge, I will extend a request for any and all to teach me about what’s what in the fashion world. Feel free to reach me at: Guarasci Land Dirty Mind -Pure Heart Happy Fashion Finds e’erybuddy!!! This upcoming Saturday on St. Patrick's Day, Irish middleweight Matthew Macklin is taking on Argentinian, Sergio Martinez for the Ring Magazine Middleweight Championship at Madison Square Garden.

* Ignacio Mejia, 24, Sto. Dgo. Dominican Republic 2-Name of your blog? * Republica Fashionista 3-How did you come up with the name for your blog? * Mmm ... Well the name came out of nowhere, the only thing that clear was that I had wanted something that had some character and that will identify fashion, then I found the word "Republica" which to me is a strong word and it means or more whoever it is sovereign and independent state on the other hand the word "Fashionista," which is anyone who follows or worships what is fashion ...These two things combined to me say "Republica Fashionista" everyone who is part owner of a sovereign and independent style ... That's why I picked the name, something profound ... Hehehe! 4-How long have you Blogging? * 2 years. 5-Why and how you decided to enter the world of blogging, specifically blogging about fashion? * Since I have always felt passionate about fashion, I have always followed ... And a year and a half ago noted that here in the country there were very few who wrote on the web about fashion (Which has changed a lot) and this motivated me to create the blog ... And also the fact that I felt that the web could reach more people and much faster. 6-What if any is the difference between a blogger in the U..S. and the Dominican Republic? * I feel that more than a difference between the blogger there is more of a difference between fashion and the other is that ... Here in Dominican Republic The circle of fashion is much more closed which sometimes makes it difficult to obtain information unlike the U.S. Where fashion has a wider readership. 7-In 6 months when you look like Blogguero fashion and where once your blog? * In 6 months I am more established and positioned, which would result in the blog reaching a wider range of followers. 8-What is your goal for your blog in 5 years? * Good 5 years from now I see "Republica Fashionista" as a page in which people take as fixed reference in finding information on fashion, trends and lifestyles ... I am also perhaps with a column in a print medium (Which I admit is one of my dreams) finally I see it established as a means of fashion. 9-How do you describe your personal style? * I would say that I'm something like "Urban Chic" I'm very informal in dressing but with some casual touches in my "Outfit's". 10-For who or for which blog would like to be a blog guest blogger on? * Here in the country I would like to work with "Mundo Femenino" or "Ella es Fashion" ... And out of here I would love "The Sartorialist", "Jezebel" and of course "Chica Fashionl" ... hehehehe! 11 - What trends are you currently loving and which ones do you dislike? * I like the "Snake Pattern" its especially fun of this this season and bringing color, the fact that you can complement up your clothes, also I like textured and metallic prints ... And dislikes, none come to mind. 12-How do you shop, on a budget, online, thrifting? * At the time I have no fixed pattern, I can buy from a boutique or store brand to a table at a flea market... I am looking everywhere and if I find something I like I'll take it, if I can afford it! I have learned that better managing my budget is the way to go. ... Hehehe! 13-What are the rules you always use when you're blogging about fashion? -I always try to be as clear and direct in my idea, so that the message of the information is perfect ... That the end is what we all seek, to express an idea. 14-Current music you're listening to? * I listen to everything, but I'm listening to a lot lately is "Adele", "Katty Perry", "Ne-Yo" among others, but again I listen to everything! 15-Your favorite dish and your favorite restaurant? * Mmm ... Thinking about it right now I have no favorite dish ... But if I can tell you a drink, but for the record I am not alcoholic hehehehe! Lately wherever I go I ask for a sangria I am becoming an expert of this drink ...Although I like the way they prepare it the most in the local bar called "Maruja" 16-Anything you would like readers to know about you or your blog? * Well I'm a soul full of peace, love and color ... And just try to make blog shed some light as to what is fashion ... And bring a bit to this industry which I as I said earlier I love! I hope you enjoyed my answers and that they were clear enough ... Thanks for taking me into consideration for this! A big hug! :) (español) 1-Nombre, edad, residencia? *Ignacio Mejia, 24 años, Sto. Dgo. Rep. Dom. 2-Nombre de su blog? *República Fashionista. 3-Como surgió el nombre del blog? *mmm... Pues he aprendido que presupuestandome me manejo mejor... Jejeje! 15-Tu plato preferido y tu restaurante favorito? *Mmm... Analizando yo ahora, no tengo ningun plato favorito... :) |
