4 Tips To Keep Your Family Safe This Winter

1/4/2021

Comments

For the last 10 months, 2020 has been under the coronavirus pandemic and while it may be scary for many of us, winter throws a greater risk of being affected by this virus in one way or another. To help keep yourself, friends, neighbors, and your loved ones safe, there are a few things to help you that you can continue to keep doing today until you receive proper care.
  • Hand Washing Encouragement: This is a very special and important step to not only have become a habit for yourself but also if you have young children. Have them starting getting a routine of washing their hands every single day. Although most children might not show any symptoms of having this virus, you also don’t want them to potentially pass it to a family member or a senior family member. If you’ve been grocery shopping or your kids have been outside even for a few minutes, you’ll want to immediately wash their hands with soap and water before doing anything else inside. We sing various songs such as “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” or “ABC”s to make sure that we are washing our hands for about 2 minutes as well.
  • Heat Your Home Safely: While our home can get cold, you’ll want to make sure that you are heating it properly. If you have a space heater to help heat your home, you’ll have to be extremely cautious. It’s important to read the manufacturer’s instructions as well as the warning labels before using any space heater. You should also inspect the heater regularly, make sure that if you see any loose connection or broken plugs that you immediately turn it off, and of course, they should never be left unattended. Some heaters offer an A-plus safety rating and also features an automatic shut off which can ease your worries a bit. 12-hour timers work together to provide a safer heating source and allow your family to still stay warm without having to think about these little things.

  • Look For Moisture - You might not think that moisture will be seeping into your home but because we live on the East coast, we do tend to get a lot of snow. That snow then builds up on our roof and could cause leaks in our ceiling or worse, in our attic. If you’re like me, I don’t visit my attic very often but I need to start to check on it from time to time because I don’t want any mold to occur. If it does happen, be sure to call a professional to help you. Nash Everett is a family run business that I can trust to do the job correctly the first time. Not only do they offer mold inspection services in the Cinnaminson area but they also look at your ventilation, ductwork, and provide a health inspection. Their industrial hygiene staff performs visual inspections and collects air and contact samples to determine what models are present and then design remediation options for mitigation. Their services are tailored for immediate response or whatever your circumstances require.
  • Stay Home - Covering your face to protect yourself from COVID-19 is extremely helpful, especially when you are running your daily errands but if you’re fearful due to  a weakened immune system or deficiency, it is best to stay home. During these times home delivery services are great for accomplishing typical errands. Services like GrubHub, InstantCart, ShopRite from Home and even medical/ pharmaceutical delivery services are lifesavers. There are even laundry drop off/ pick up services that not only make life more convenient but safer for us all. Wearing mask while out will provide peace of mind, additionally, keeping social distance if out in public, as well as staying 6 feet apart from others and doing what you can to keep yourself healthy will keep you safe.
This winter, our biggest struggle will be to do our best to stay healthy. Maintain eating the proper fruits and vegetables, try to exercise with your children if possible, and continue to follow the guidelines. I know 2020 has not been kind to many of us but know that if we do our part, we are helping to keep our family safe this cold season.
